Critical Thinking and Reading

Being able to compare and contrast is an important critical thinking skill to enhance reading.

Comparing is finding similarities between different things (characters, themes, ideas, details, settings, etc.).

Contrasting is finding differences between different things (characters, themes, ideas, details, settings, etc.).

By finding similarities and differences while reading, the text becomes clearer and easier to understand.

A Venn Diagram is a great graphic organizer to illustrate comparing and contrasting.

Watch the following clip.

Compare and contrast as you watch, looking carefully for similarities and differences.
